CCT - Colvin Run Mill to Difficult Run Parking Lot (11/1/08)

Well, this was a memorable day...

Having been bit by the CCT bug (see previous entry for details on the Cross County Trail), Mom and I set out today to do another section. It was another gorgeous day and we were both anxious to clear our minds of clutter and fill them with the beauty and enjoyment of God's creation.

So...we decided to do a one way hike, meaning we parked my car at one end and Mom's at the other. Starting at Colvin Run, we followed the directions in my book and found the trail. The wonderful thing about this trail is that, much of the time, you don't even realize you're still in NoVA. Of course, you do occassionally come upon houses - in fact, we walked right through someone's backyard today - but for the most part you can pretend you're deep in the wilderness.

After a lovely, liesurely hike including a stop along Difficult Run for a snack (we followed Difficult Run the majority of the hike)
we made it to the other end of the trail where my car was parked.

Now, my beloved mother would never tell this part of the story...but what happened at this point was quite unexpected. As we approached the parking lot where my cute little Honda CRV sat happlily waiting to shuttle us back to Colvin Run Mill, it suddenly dawned upon me that I had left my car keys in Mom's car!!! I reluctantly and sheepishly shared the news with Mom. After taking moment to adjust to the unwelcome news, she valiantly turned on her heal and headed back to Colvin Run Mill - thus doubling the originally intended distance of our hike.

Now, Mom will tell you that it was a good thing that this happened because otherwise the hike really would have been too short. But she will also tell you that, on future hikes, she will always ascertain the whereabouts of my keys before GETTING OUT THERE! I love you, Mom!

P.S. If anyone can illuminate us on this monstrosity that we came across on our hike, we would both be very appreciative. Is this a house??? We figured it's off of Old Dominion somewhere...

It was a wonderful day, Kim, and I loved every minute of it, including the hike back. I'm glad you forgot your keys. Love you, Mom
