Bull Run Mountains Conservancy

Okay, Jon - this is for you! It's been six weeks since I have posted about GETTING OUT THERE and Jon is really riding me for it. Oh well, at least it's nice to have a fan! :)

On November 10th, I headed out 66 just past Haymarket to the Bull Run Mountains Convservancy which exists for the sole purpose of...well, conserving the Bull Run Mountains that run along 66 just outside NoVA. Ever noticed the old burned out mill there on the right as you head out West 66? Well, this is the area all around that (mostly to the north). They actually have some intersting history about that old mill on signs along the hike.

Another cool thing about this place is that they do a ton of ecological research...I talked with the park ranger about maybe doing some research of my own once I'm along in my naturalist education. He said, "this is the place!" Here's the link if you're interested: http://www.brmconservancy.org/

After a challenging hike - not physically, but in terms of finding the right trails - I made it to the top of the "mountain" which had quite a lovely view of the surrounding valley. I could even see Route 66 off the the north.

It was a bit chilly at the top but well worth the trip.

On the way down I did a bit of experimenting with taking pictures through my sunglasses because I thought the leaves looked so pretty through them!

Ya - maybe not! Oh well. I'm going to keep hiking through the winter, so hopefully I'll get some nice snow shots up here soon! I know it's cold out, but that's no excuse. GET OUT THERE!!!
